The ambitious prime minister and head of British diplomacy still does not know whether France is friend or foe. At least that’s what Liz Truss confirmed Thursday in an interview during an election rally. Truss is the favorite to win the Conservative primary, which ends on September 2.
“The public wants to ask questions. President Macron, friend or foe?” asked the event presenter.
“The jury is out”
“The jury is still outBut if I become prime minister, I will judge him by deeds, not words.”
His words caused an uproar on both sides. “It’s time for the West and our allies to stand united against Putin’s attempts to divide us, not get into petty feuds with France,” David Lammy, Labor MP in charge of foreign affairs, said in a tweet.
“A huge mistake”
“This is a grave mistake that the foreign minister should withdraw,” he addedAlistair Burt criticized his predecessor in charge of his squad “The best answer was: Of course he and France are friends and allies, which does not mean that we have no differences”.
Macron knows
But President Emmanuel Macron, who is visiting Algeria, gave the expected response:
“Whatever the next leader of the United Kingdom may be, I do not doubt that for a moment, the United Kingdom is a friend of France.”
Recently, various issues have tightened the cord between the two countries. Among them are the standoffs caused by Brexit, or the different way of dealing with relations with the Kremlin.
