The current CEO, President and Director are leaving their positions effective immediately, and will be replaced on an interim basis by James M. Whitehurst. However, Riccitiello will continue as a consultant for Unity with the goal of “ensuring a smooth transition.”

In a brief statement, Riccitiello explained, “It has been an honor to lead Unity for nearly a decade and serve our employees, consumers, developers, and partners, all of whom have played an integral role in the company’s growth.”

The controversial director’s departure comes a few weeks after the company was embroiled in a bitter controversy over changes to its monetization and property rights policies. After intense anger from developers using the popular engine, Unity backed down and revised its terms.

Riccitiello became CEO of Unity Technologies at the end of 2014, after serving since November 2013 as an advisor to the board of directors. He was previously known to have been the Chairman of Electronic Arts and the founder of Elevation Partners.
