International support for El Salvador on food

Since yesterday, El Salvador is hosting the meeting of the Regional Network for Public Supply and Marketing Systems (SPAA Network), where Latin American countries will discuss common strategies to strengthen their food security systems and exchange successful experiences.

According to the technical secretary of the Red SPAA, Joao Intini, the meeting is taking place in the country thanks to an agreement between the government and the Food and Agriculture Organization to discuss key issues related to food supply, food marketing and other issues important for the development of agriculture such as training, climate control and prices.

The official indicated that after the meeting, tomorrow, Wednesday, they will meet with the Salvadoran authorities to draw up a roadmap for technical assistance from the Food and Agriculture Organization, and other countries and institutions, in order to organize a national food supply policy for the benefit of the local population. .

In this regard, the Commissioner for Strategic Projects of the Salvadoran government, Cristian Flores, announced that, with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization and other partners in the country, the President of the Republic, Neb Bukele, will announce in the coming days the initiative to create an agricultural development and trade system.

Flores said that FAO took the initiative to present this initiative to the member states of the SPAA network to learn about similar experiences and to collect inputs for the country.

The project will address elements such as digitizing agriculture, adapting agriculture to climate change, promoting sustainable agriculture to meet the demand for organic and sustainable products, investing in research and technical and economic support for small farmers and cooperatives, among others.

In the local environment, the effects of El Niño have raised alarms about potential impacts on food production, especially staple cereals.
