Guatemala’s tribunal of electoral councils denounced the abuses

GUATEMALA CITY, July 7 (Prensa Latina) Guatemala’s Supreme Electoral Court denounced before the Attorney General’s office the violations committed by the junta during the June 25 elections, an official source reported here today.

In a meeting with prosecutors from political parties, the head of that entity, Irma Palencia, added to the facts presented to the prosecution against the members of those bodies, the burning of ballot papers and the damage to facilities.

And she stressed that the judge raised the issue of the hospitalization of some citizens and the disappearance of others, forcing them to submit a subpoena.

Valencia called for coherence between discourse and practice, referring to the violent stance embodied by the political forces and their branches in the context of competition.

During the elections, the high stakes table recorded threats to reception boards and municipal councils in the provinces of Huehuetenango, Jalapa, Quetzaltenango, and Alta Verapaz.

The participants in the meeting agreed that for the second round of elections, the authorities should ensure the security of the participants in the counting of votes.

Since last Sunday, various sectors of society and international organizations have supported the work of the councils, whose actions have been questioned by political groups who are not satisfied with the results of the vote.

Although the second scrutiny of the minutes of the meeting directed by the Constitutional Court ended last night, in the presence of prosecutors and members of the councils, uncertainty still exists in Guatemala due to the continuation of polling.

The new review process, which took place between Tuesday and Thursday, confirmed that candidates Sandra Torres, the former first lady and representative of the National Unity of Hope, and Bernardo Arevalo, of the Seed movement, will have to contest the presidency on August 20.
