Google Maps Introduces 3D Navigation and Gemini AI Features

Google has unveiled a significant update to Google Maps, bringing a redesigned navigation experience powered by its Gemini artificial intelligence. The update introduces a new 3D driving view and a conversational AI feature within the app, marking one of the most substantial changes to Google Maps in years.

The rollout reflects Google’s broader push to integrate AI across its services, following recent updates to Gmail and Chrome.

Google Maps Adds 3D “Immersive Navigation” for Drivers

The headline feature is a new driving mode called Immersive Navigation, which replaces the traditional flat map view with a three-dimensional rendering of the surrounding environment.

Instead of the familiar 2D interface, drivers will now see a 3D representation of nearby streets, buildings, bridges and overpasses. Google says the change is designed to help motorists orient themselves more easily while driving, particularly in complex urban environments.

The feature draws on data from Google’s extensive Street View imagery and aerial photography to build the visual model of each location. According to the company, its Gemini AI system dynamically determines how different elements appear on screen, reducing clutter and highlighting important road features.

These may include:

• Crossings and pedestrian areas
• Traffic lights and stop signs
• Slip roads and motorway exits

By emphasising key elements at the right moment, Google aims to make route guidance clearer and easier to follow.

AI-Powered Voice Guidance Becomes More Natural

Google has also updated the voice guidance used during navigation.

The company says Gemini’s language capabilities allow the system to deliver directions in a more conversational and intuitive way. Rather than relying heavily on road names, instructions may sound more like natural spoken guidance.

For instance, instead of a purely technical instruction, drivers might hear something like: “Go past this exit and take the next one.”

This approach could prove particularly helpful for drivers travelling in unfamiliar areas or abroad, where road names may be difficult to recognise.

Smarter Route Suggestions and Parking Guidance

The update also introduces more detailed explanations when Google Maps suggests alternative routes.

Previously, the app might simply recommend a different path based on traffic conditions. With the new system, the app will explain the potential trade-offs before drivers choose a route.

For example, it may indicate that:

• One route is slightly longer but avoids heavy traffic
• Another option is quicker but likely to be busier

Before a journey begins, Maps will also provide a Street View preview of the destination, along with suggestions for nearby parking locations.

This could be particularly useful in dense city centres where finding a parking space can be difficult.

Gemini AI Arrives in Maps with “Ask Maps”

Alongside navigation improvements, Google is integrating its Gemini chatbot directly into Google Maps through a feature called Ask Maps.

A new icon inside the app allows users to type questions in natural language. Gemini then uses Google Maps data — including location information, business listings and reviews — to generate tailored answers.

Google says the feature is designed to provide more practical recommendations than a traditional search.

For example, a user could ask the app to find:

• A café where they can charge a phone
• A quiet place for coffee nearby
• A restaurant with short waiting times

Previously, answering such questions might have required browsing through multiple reviews or listings.

Gemini can also personalise results using places the user has previously searched for or saved in Google Maps.

From within the same interface, users can then act on the recommendations — such as saving a location or making a reservation.

Rollout Begins in the United States

Google says the immersive driving experience is starting to roll out in the United States from today.

The feature will expand gradually to more devices and platforms over the coming months, including:

• Android and iOS smartphones
• Apple CarPlay
• Android Auto
• Vehicles with Google built-in infotainment systems

The Ask Maps feature is initially launching on Android and iOS devices in the United States and India. Desktop support is expected to follow.
