Fostering interest in science at an early age will attract new generations

  • The College of Chemical Engineering celebrates the Day of Women and Girls in Science

Mérida, Yucatán, February 23, 2024. – Raising awareness and promoting interest in the fields of engineering and mathematics among girls at an early age will attract new generations to consider studying science as an option, said the Director General of Academic Development of the Autonomous Region. University of Yucatan (UADY), Marcela Zamudio Maya.

The Faculty of Chemical Engineering at UADY University held a day of activities within the framework of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and during the opening the academy explained that the goal is for the university community and society in general to obtain knowledge from the hands of those who produce it, which shows that women struggle every day to put themselves daily in knowledge.

He stressed that “UADY University considers achieving actual equality between women and men one of its priorities, within the framework of respect for human rights, and for this reason it considers it necessary to institutionalize a gender perspective in all university activities.”

In turn, FIQ Director, Dalmira Rodriguez Martin, reported that interactive activities, conferences and practices were carried out during the day in the laboratories of the aforementioned campus.

He added that students from the Academic Baccalaureate Unit with Community Interaction (UABIC), as well as the College of Scientific and Technological Studies of the State of Yucatán (CECYTEY), participated in it.

“We started with the keynote lecture by Dr. Giulietta Fierro, and after that, UABIC and CECYTEY students performed interactive activities, demonstration tables, games, as well as the opening of the reading area mural,” he explained.

Before concluding, Rodríguez Martín highlighted that Yucatan, in particular, is a community with a larger number of researchers than the rest of the country, if compared at the national level.

He pointed out, “Our state has historically been distinguished by its female presence, as we have had female governors, as well as important female thinkers.”
