Barbara Gordon is flying again! After some difficulty getting off the ground, Batgirl is officially in the works, and it’s coming soon what comic book fans might think.

Batgirl was originally announced in March 2017 with Joss Whedon appointed to direct, write, and produce the film. But a year later, the Avengers director backed down from the project, saying he had “no story” for the script.

“The story just fell apart in my hands,” the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer told Variety in April 2018. “There were items that I had just not mastered, after a long time, I felt I wouldn’t. I told people I had no idea, which is not quite right. I had an idea, but it didn’t fit into the space left for him. It was a bit heartbreaking.”

However, DC did not abandon the project and hired Christina Hudson to replace Whedon as writer. The British national is well-versed in the comedy tradition, having penned the 2020 film Birds of Prey (and the remarkable liberation of one person Harley Quinn) starring Margot Robbie. Hodson also writes The Flash, which is due for release in November 2022.

The nickname Batgirl has been used by many women throughout DC Comics’ long history, but the new film will focus on Barbara Gordon, widely known as the most iconic version of the character. Barbara is the daughter of James Gordon, a police commissioner who has appeared in many Batman comics and films.

Like Batman, Batgirl has no supernatural powers, but he is an expert in martial arts who knows high-tech weapons. In many of her selfies, she’s also a great hacker.

Despite her fan-favorite status, Batgirl has only appeared twice in live-action Batman films. Alicia Silverstone wore the cape in the 1997 movie Batman & Robin, but her character was named Barbara Wilson. She is identified as the niece of Bruce Wayne’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth.

The 2008 film The Dark Knight featured a brief appearance by Hannah Jean as Commissioner Gordon’s unnamed daughter, but her name was not Batgirl; The credits only mentioned her as “Gordon’s Daughter”.

In July 2021, news broke that Leslie Grace had landed the role of Batgirl in the new film. The project will be the singer’s second film after making her big screen debut in the 2021 film adaptation of In the Heights.

“I can’t say much about what she’ll do, but Batgirl becomes her hero,” the New York City native told Ellie in October 2021.[Her origin story] It’s insanely dark, like a lot of other superheroes, but I’d love to be Batgirl because she wants to make a difference in the world.”
