Earth’s core has been slowing down since 2010

Washington, June 13 (Prensa Latina) The Earth’s inner core has slowed down since 2010 relative to the planet’s surface, as it moves more slowly, as it appeared today.

New research has concluded that this process is reversing and receding relative to the planet’s surface because it is moving slightly slower rather than faster than the Earth’s mantle for the first time in about 40 years, and relative to its speed in previous decades, the inner core is slowing down. A study conducted by the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Southern California.

The researchers, along with other experts from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, collected and analyzed seismic data recorded around the South Sandwich Islands from 121 recurring earthquakes that occurred between 1991 and 2023; As well as the Soviet nuclear tests between 1971 and 1974, and the same operations, but the French and Americans repeated other studies of the inner essence.

In this way, they found that the deceleration speed of the inner core is due to the movement of the outer core from the liquid iron that surrounds it, which generates the Earth’s magnetic field, as well as due to the gravitational attraction forces of dense regions of the atmosphere. Rocky mantle.

Although they do not yet have concrete evidence of the repercussions of this slowdown on the Earth’s surface, experts believe that the retreat of the inner core could change the length of the day by fractions of a second.

“It is very difficult to notice that, on the order of a millisecond, it is almost lost in the noise of the oceans and atmosphere,” said John Vidal, a professor of earth sciences at the University of Southern California.

In the study published in the journal Nature, the researchers indicated that the inner core is a solid ball of iron and nickel surrounded by an outer core of liquid iron and nickel.

It cannot be visited or seen, but research on this place indicates that it is approximately the size of the moon and is located more than 4,600 kilometers below our feet.
