Three hospitals in Wales are operating at or near their capacity while simultaneously understaffing.

All three hospitals are in what is known as “CritCon status 3B” – Critcon 3 means that they are at full capacity with the expansion of critical care to other areas of the hospital and the stopping of routine procedures. B highlights declining levels of employment.

If the hospital reaches Critcon 4, resources are under enormous pressure, opening the door to the possibility that staff will have to select critically ill patients for treatment.

A Welsh government spokesperson said: “We currently have three hospitals at CritCon 3B. However, this is reviewed regularly and could change on a daily basis.”

The CritCon system is designed to represent the level of “stress” in the system, and any deviation required from normal practice.
