Coinbase has appointed George Osborne, the former UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, as an advisor.

Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase will add former UK Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne to its global advisory board, as the company accelerates its international expansion strategy and comes under increased regulatory scrutiny.

In this sense, Coinbase noted that this advisory board was created to advise the company on its global strategy, and stressed that Osborne has decades of experience at the highest levels of government, in international finance, and in fintech investments.

“We are delighted that George has joined our board at an exciting time for us in the UK and around the world,” said Faryar Shirzad, Coinbase’s chief policy officer, who was Treasury chief under David Cameron between 2010 and 2016. “He brings a wealth of experience in business, journalism and government.”

For his part, the former minister stressed that there is currently a huge amount of exciting innovation in the field of finance, noting that “blockchain” is transforming financial markets and online transactions. “Coinbase is at the forefront of these developments. I look forward to working with the team there as they build a new future in financial services,” he added.

George Osborne, 52, is a partner at investment boutique Robbie Warshaw and was previously editor of the Evening Standard after serving as UK Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2010 to 2016.
