Caribbean countries benefit from Malaysia’s South-South cooperation (+ photo)

HAVANA, June 30 (Prensa Latina) Young professionals from the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic have in recent years benefited from the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Program (PCTM) training courses, which today take on a new dimension.

“This scheme was drawn up in 1980 as part of Malaysia’s commitment to South-South Cooperation, with the aim of sharing technical knowledge and development expertise with developing countries,” said Chandrawasih Abdul Malik, Business Director at the Embassy of Malaysia. Havana.

The diplomat led a meeting at the mission headquarters with Cuban professionals graduated from the PCTM courses who formed an association to keep in touch and this Friday celebrated its twentieth anniversary.

The PCTM hypothesis is based on the fact that the development of a country depends on the quality of its capital and human resources. It focuses on vocational training through short courses in Malaysian public and private institutions, as well as longer curricula in the country’s universities.

Chandrawasih said other forms of assistance include study tours, hands-on work and expert services.

Every year PCTM offers more than 100 registrations in different regions. To date, more than 35,000 young professionals from 144 countries, including the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, have benefited from these technical training courses.

From Havana, the Embassy of Malaysia takes care of consular and diplomatic affairs as concurrently in the Bahamas, Haiti, Jamaica, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic.

The business manager explained that 76 Cubans have graduated from the PCTM, while 36 Jamaicans, 12 Bahamians and six Dominicans have graduated.

Chandrawasih announced that starting this year, in addition to the courses, TCP Malaysia will offer scholarships to those wishing to increase their professional skills and abilities.
