Anahuac Puebla College of Health Sciences leads research in scientific advances in the field of multiple sclerosis

Contributing knowledge to discovery and innovation to build a healthier future, especially in the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS), Dr. Guillermo J. Ruiz Arguelles, together with students Meritzel Abigail Montes Robles and María de Lourdes Pastelín Martinez, from the College of Health Anahuac Puebla Sciences published a research article titled “Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell II Transplantation in Multiple Sclerosis: A Single-Center Prospective Trial.”

The research highlights the effectiveness of autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (aHSCT) as a treatment for patients with MS, especially when combined with immunosuppressive therapy. This treatment has been proven to stabilize the neurological condition in 80% of patients. However, some patients do not respond favorably to the first transplant, which has led to the option of a second transplant being explored as a hope to slow the progression of the disease.

The study included a retrospective analysis of 1,225 MS patients who received their first AHSCT between January 2016 and February 2023. Among these patients, those who did not respond adequately to the first transplant were identified and were offered a second transplant. Although 50% of second transplant recipients demonstrated stability on the Expanded Scale of Disability Status (EEED), the need for additional, long-term analyzes to determine the ultimate efficacy of this treatment in patients with post-transplant neurological deterioration was highlighted. Organ transplant.

The research conducted by Dr. Guillermo G. Ruiz Arguelles and students highlights Anahuac Puebla's commitment to scientific advancement and community well-being, as well as its role in training health professionals dedicated to improving the quality of life for those facing complex diseases. .
