Amazon warehouse workers in the UK are on strike

According to television in the capital, about 300,000 employees are expected to join the protest organized by the “GMB” trade union.

Employees are ready to make history by standing up for what’s right, union spokeswoman Amanda Gering said, noting wage increases amid the company’s rationalization efforts.

The United Kingdom has been swept by a wave of strikes since December 2022 amid a sharp rise in inflation and falling real incomes.

In addition to health sector employees, railway workers, border control officers, teachers and postal drivers have joined the protests, calling for wage demands amid the bitter cost of living crisis.

As for Amazon, for its part, it confirmed that stopping work will not affect the quality of the services provided.

The US online retailer recently announced the closure of three stores in the UK, which could result in the layoffs of at least 1,200 employees.

Amazon’s number of workers has nearly doubled since 2020, but despite that, the company’s revenue growth has slowed.

It was also reported that due to pressure from investors to limit spending, the company began looking for unprofitable divisions.
