The NGO has asked the G7 to speed up the distribution of doses from June to August
They have ensured that the transfer of vaccines will not significantly delay vaccination plans in more developed areas
Fernando Alonso has joined the request by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) – which requires immediate action so that G7 countries donate vaccines as quickly as possible. They have criticized that the Global Access Fund for Covid-19 Vaccines – COVAX – is short on as many as 190 million doses.
UNICEF published an open letter asking the Group of Seven nations, which met this weekend, to expedite the delivery of vaccines to the countries most in need as quickly as possible. Fernando Alonso, among other public figures, signed the statement.
The Group of Seven, a group made up of the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Japan, Germany, France and Italy, met this weekend to discuss issues such as vaccination. Finally, the decision was made to distribute at least 870 million doses to developing countries.
The problem highlighted by both UNICEF and other organizations, such as the World Health Organization – the World Health Organization – is the time of delivery of these vaccines. Half of the promised doses are expected to arrive by the end of the year, an unspecified and late date, as indicated in the open letter.
UNICEF has ensured that COVAX, the 190-nation organization responsible for ensuring the equitable distribution of vaccines, has 190 million fewer vaccines than it needs.
“UNICEF analyzes show that G7 countries will soon have enough doses to donate 20% of their vaccines between June and August, more than 150 million doses, without significant delay in those countries’ vaccination plans,” the NGO’s open letter said.
In conclusion, they stressed that the pandemic cannot be completely eradicated until we are globally free from the virus. The letter was later signed by celebrities, including Fernando Alonso and other athletes such as Sergio Ramos, Leo Messi or Pau Gasol.
