A parliamentary committee declares a lithium plant in Peru a priority

LIMA, May 8 (Prensa Latina) Today, a commission of the Peruvian Congress approved a bill declaring the manufacture of lithium in a factory in a country of national interest and public necessity, given the importance of this metal.

The document approved by the Parliamentary Energy and Mines Committee proposes building and operating a plant.

It states that the exploration, exploitation, manufacture and marketing of lithium in the country is of a strategic nature and that production is for public use.

The project, approved by the Commission in a decentralized session, in the southern region of Mukwegewa, adds that the exploitation of this resource must meet national demand and its surpluses will be marketed internationally.

To do this, he entrusts the Ministries of Energy, Mines, Production, Economy and Finance with the task of implementing the project.

However, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Oscar Vera, announced a few weeks ago that the executive expects to approve pending private exploration permits for lithium in Peru in the coming months, the presence of which was discovered in the South Andean region of Puno.

He added that he had spoken with Canadian investors interested in exploring the soft metal, which is key to batteries for electric cars and mobile phones, which gives him great economic value.

On the other hand, Macusani Yellowcake, of the Canadian company Plateau Energy Metals, has conducted preliminary studies in Puno estimating the potential of four million and 700 thousand tons of lithium carbonate.

Government expectations are alien to the agreement drawn up by the major producers of the precious metals in South America, Argentina, Bolivia and Chile to produce, process, manufacture and export lithium for batteries.
