The Secretary-General of Avanzada Progresista, in statements to Venezolana de Televisión, emphasized that the coercive measures carried out against the South American country do not produce political changes and cause effects on the population, by preventing the purchase of medicines to counter the impact of the pandemic. .

The opposition leader said that “unilateral measures to obstruct and attack Venezuela are unfair because their results affect the people,” referring to the measures promoted by the National Assembly (Parliament) to activate international mechanisms to defend the country’s interests.

The day before, the Venezuelan government denounced blocking four transfers of $10 million to buy vaccines through the Kovacs program, under the pretext of an alleged investigation into the funds.

“Venezuela has been excluded from the international financial system and has been a victim of aggression by this unjust policy against the enforcement of human rights in our country,” Vice President Delcy Rodriguez said during a conference on the impact of coercive measures.

Similarly, Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza confirmed via Twitter that the Bolivarian State has paid all its obligations with the Kovacs Mechanism, a total of $120 million to purchase the agreed 11 million doses.

Venezuelan health authorities began the process of vaccination for healthcare workers and other priority sectors of the population in February of this year, thanks to agreements with Russia and China to purchase Sputnik V and Sinopharm antigens, respectively.

In order to complete the protection of at least 70 percent of Venezuelans this year, the Bolivarian executive branch intensified the vaccination campaign last week, after 1,300,000 doses arrived in the country recently from the Asian country and another shipment sent by Moscow.

The South American country is also waiting for the first five million vaccines to arrive through Covax in July, along with agreements with the Russian and Chinese governments, as well as with Cuba, for the acquisition and production of antigens developed against the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen.
