The match, the first for Mexico in 15 months in the United States, was marked by a double by striker Herving “Chucky” Lozano.
Lozano’s first goal came in the 72nd minute after a counter-attack led by Diego Lainese ended.
Chucky scored the second goal with a header from Hector Herrera, the Atletico Madrid player and the current champion of the Spanish League, in the 78th minute.
Iceland’s goal was the result of an own goal scored by Edson Alvarez, who blocked Mar Sivarson’s shot and sent off Mexican goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera in the 15th minute of the first half.
“I think the result is fair,” said Gerardo “Tata” Martino, the Mexican coach. “We control the game for most of the 90 minutes and create many chances to score.”
On June 3, in Denver, Mexico will play Costa Rica in one of the semifinals of the fourth CONCACAF Championship, while the United States will play Honduras.
