“The best medicine is prevention”

Madrid, 10 (European press)

Dr. Maria Reyes García de la Fuente, dermatologist at Vithas Lleida, noted that although there is a genetic predisposition, the risk factor for skin cancer is light exposure, which is why she emphasized that “the best medicine is prevention.”

The expert expressed this recommendation on the occasion of World Skin Cancer Day, which is celebrated on Monday, June 13, and added that during the summer period “it is time to protect oneself by all available means”, such as coverage. Wear clothes that provide good protection from the sun. He added that “dark colors and dense fabrics provide more protection from the sun’s rays compared to light clothing and luxurious fabrics.”

Likewise, Vithas Lleida Medical Center will be conducting a training activity throughout Monday, June 13. Members of the health staff will receive all patients with an explanation of the prevention of skin cancer, provide them with a sample of sunscreen, and encourage them to make an appointment with a dermatologist to check the condition of their skin.

To protect yourself from the sun, García de la Fuente also recommends photoscreens suitable for every skin type, with a high UVB index and integrating a UVA filter. Therefore, it is convenient to use creams with a UVA filter even if we are inside the car or by the window.

For the eyes, the expert appeals to the use of sunglasses because of their high sensitivity to UV rays. Finally, it is advisable to moisturize them properly and avoid exposure to the sun in the middle of the day, as the maximum UV radiation is between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
