Filtronic lands $8m satellite payload order as shares languish near half of peak

A fresh US satellite contract extends a fast-growing relationship, but the stock remains stuck well below its highs after the SpaceX-linked rally faded.

Filtronic (AIM: FTC) has landed an $8m follow-on order from a US satellite customer, covering the design, development and build of prototype millimetre-wave units, as the radio frequency specialist tries to rebuild investor confidence after a punishing few months for its share price.

The award builds on a relationship that began with a $0.5m development contract in June and an $8m amplifier order from the same customer in March, taking the total value of the tie-up to around $16.5m in under a year. Despite the steady flow of new business, Filtronic's shares are still trading at less than half their peak, with the stock's earlier surge on hopes tied to SpaceX having unwound sharply following underwhelming results.

Filtronic said the new order reinforces its position in millimetre-wave technology for satellite payloads, a segment it has been targeting as demand grows for high-frequency communications hardware in low-earth-orbit constellations. Chief executive Nat Edington said the follow-on contract demonstrated the 'growing relationship and confidence' the US customer has in Filtronic's technical expertise, and pointed to the firm's ability to develop advanced mmWave technology 'at pace' as a differentiator in the market.

The timing gives investors a longer runway to assess the business: the contract is expected to complete in the first half of FY2028, with revenue recognised across both FY2027 and FY2028, offering Filtronic improved visibility over its order book at a time when sentiment towards the stock has cooled considerably.

The key question for shareholders is whether a run of incremental contract wins with this single US customer can offset the damage done to sentiment by fading SpaceX-related hype and a disappointing set of results earlier this year. With no fresh trading update accompanying this announcement, the market's verdict on whether it is enough to arrest the share price slide will only become clear in the days ahead.
