Winking Studios shares edge up 1.79% as interim revenue jumps 21% to $23.5m

Heavy investment in North American expansion and AI is squeezing margins now, but brokers expect the payoff to show through next year.

Winking Studios (AIM: WKS) saw its shares tick up 1.79% to 14.25p after the video games art outsourcing specialist reported a 21% rise in interim revenue to $23.5m, with organic growth of 9% underpinning the headline figure.

The muted share price reaction reflects a trade-off investors are being asked to accept: all of the growth came from the art outsourcing division, while game development services stayed flat, a pattern management expects to persist through the second half. Spending on building out North American operations and on AI investment is weighing on margins and profitability today, even as the top line expands.

Broker SP Angel has trimmed its full-year revenue forecast to $47.9m, citing timing issues around contract delivery, though it notes most of the anticipated second-half contribution is already sitting in the order book, lending some confidence to the reduced figure. The broker expects continued investment to push Winking Studios to a full-year loss of $6.6m.

The read-through for shareholders is that near-term profitability is being sacrificed for scale, with new North American staff and AI capability yet to generate meaningful returns. SP Angel expects growth to accelerate and gross margins to recover to historical levels once these new hires begin contributing revenue.

Investors will be watching for evidence that the North American push and AI investment start converting into higher-margin business next year, with the flat game development segment also one to monitor for any signs of a turnaround alongside the stronger art outsourcing trend.
