Ecuador is preparing for comprehensive general elections

According to official data, about 426,738 people with disabilities will benefit from the measures approved on Sunday. Of these, 635 people had a physical disability of over 75% and over 55 had been able to vote from their homes since Friday, February 5.

To achieve this, the National Elections Council signed an alliance with the Federation of Taxi Transport Cooperatives so that, while respecting biosafety measures, they transport 173 members of the vote-receiving boards to the voters’ homes.

Preferential voting will also take place, so people with disabilities can vote without lining up, as long as they hold their ID and disability card.

Assisted voting will allow anyone in this population group to be accompanied by someone they trust so that they can assist them when voting at voting stations. The rest of the electorate must attend the conference unaccompanied to avoid crowding.

For its part, voting will be at the Preferential Service table in easily accessible places. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with visual impairments will also have access to these tables, who will receive a braille ballot.

Inclusion of persons with disabilities and their accessibility on voting days is an initiative born 15 years ago in Ecuador as part of affirmative action so that these residents can exercise their right to vote like everyone else.
