Volga Gas reports mixed news from latest drilling on Karpenskiy licence
23 November 2009
Volga Gas, the oil and gas group operating in the Volga region of European Russia, has reported mixed news from its most recent drilling operations on its main Karpenskiy licence area.
At its Grafovskaya #1 sub-salt exploration well, the company recently set casing at a depth of 3,950 metres and installed a high pressure blow-out preventer. The well has reached a depth of 4,108 metres and has begun drilling through the first of two thick dolomite carbonate sequences which are the main exploration objectives. Volga said mud logs and initial core samples had indicated the presence of hydrocarbons, though it was too early to be able to determine the significance of the well data.
Elsewhere, production from the Uzenskoye #8 supra-salt well has been below expectations recently, leading Volga to bring forward plans to start water injection operations. During September, production reached 1,900 barrels of oil per day (bopd) and in October averaged 1,543 bopd as the wells were choked back. Volga is hoping that water injection in the first half of 2010 will restore production to the original planned levels of approximately 2,000 bopd.
Still on the Karpenskiy licence, the Vostochny-Uzenskaya #10 supra salt exploration well has been plugged and abandoned after drilling failed to find economic levels of hydrocarbons. Completion of the well fulfils Volga’s last drilling commitment on the Karpenskiy licence.
Separately, Volga said that negotiations were continuing with and Trans Nafta on transferring ownership of a gas plant that is being constructed on its Dobrinskoye field. Volga wants to commission the plant so that it can begin production from the two wells on its Vostochny Makarovskoye (VM) gas field development.
