Victoria Oil & Gas identifies possible major new accumulation at Logbaba project
04 February 2010
Exploration company Victoria Oil & Gas has identified a major potential hydrocarbon accumulation around two kilometres from the current drilling location on its Logbaba gas and condensate project in Douala, Cameroon.
The findings emerged during a passive seismic spectroscopy survey at Logbaba, where the overall results matched Victoria’s geological understanding of the Logbaba reservoir sands and correlate well with data from the four old wells and the newly drilled well La-105.
The new accumulation, which lies entirely within Victoria’s licence block, appears to be substantially larger than the existing discovery and has not been seen in any previous subsurface studies due to the lack of geophysical data.
Kevin Foo, Victoria’s chairman said the potential accumulation would be a “considerable addition” to the company’s reserve base if it is ultimately confirmed by drilling.
The survey also suggests that the most prospective area at the existing discovery lies around 300 metres from Well La-104, between that well and La-101. The company’s well design team are considering this data and its impact on the design of the next well, La106, which is due to be spudded on February 6, 2010.
The data is the first new geophysical information to be acquired over Logbaba since the discovery was made in the 1950s. Last month, Victoria reported the presence of 65 feet of “very good quality gas-bearing sandstone reservoir” during the logging of Well La-105, which is being completed as a production well.
La-101 was the first exploration well on the Logbaba project and was drilled back in 1955 by Elf SEREPCA. However, the well ended up blowing out when it encountered the over-pressured gas sands of the Logbaba formation. During that time it produced an estimated 0.9 billion cubic feet of natural gas over 38 days before being brought under control.
