Range Resources rejects Somali pirate connection
20 November 2008
Range Resources has launched a fierce rebuttal to a series of claims made in an article printed in Australia’s The Age newspaper recently which among other things suggested the company had ties to Somali pirates.
Range is operational in Somalia’s Puntland, the current focus of international attention because of rising numbers of piracy incidents thought to stem from the region.
In a statement the company rejected as "incorrect and defamatory" reports that it “has paid millions of dollars in controversial fees to Somali rebels responsible for a surge in international piracy, including the hijacking this week of an Oil Supertanker”. Instead the company said it had made legitimate - and previously disclosed - payments to the Puntland government to help fund infrastructure projects.
Range said it was now pursuing all legal options with regards to the article.
The company also clarified its position in connection with relations with Somali authorities and its joint venture partner, Canada’s Africa Oil.
