Energetix powers ahead with contract win from National Grid US
04 February 2010
Energetix, the group behind a range of alternative energy production, has won a contract from National Grid US to test its compressed-air backup power system for utility switching applications.
Energetix’ three main products include Pnu Power, Genlec and VPhase and the latest contract win will see the company’s Pnu Power unit installed on a trial basis at a National Grid electricity substation in Rhode Island.
The company believes the trial will prove the system's suitability for use in substations and other applications where lead-acid batteries and chargers are usually used. It also anticipates that the system will result in significant savings to National Grid US in terms of both installation and operating costs. As part of the agreement, successful operation of the trial unit would lead to full deployment of Pnu Power at another National Grid US site. The exact nature and specification of this system will be determined during the trial.
National Grid US is part of National Grid plc, which is already testing a Pnu Power unit at an electricity sub-station in Cheshire, UK. The US arm delivers electricity to approximately 3.3 million customers in New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, and manages the electricity network on Long Island. It is the largest distributor of natural gas in the north-eastern US.
Adrian Hutchings, the chief executive of Energetix, said the latest contract win reflected the ever increasing recognition of the Pnu Power product and was a major step towards its full commercialisation.
