EnCore Oil frustrated as rig fire delays Esmond drilling

20 October 2008

EnCore Oil said today that a fire had broken out on the Energy Enhancer drilling rig over the weekend, disrupting work on test drilling over the Esmond field in the UK North Sea.

EnCore’s operator-partner Star Energy is currently drilling a well in the UK North Sea in an effort to firm up expectations that it is sitting on a significant gas storage opportunity. EnCore has a 50% interest in the license.

As a result of a small fire in the ventilation system of the rig, non-essential personnel were evacuated, with 45 essential personnel remaining on board. An inspection of the electrical systems on the rig is now being carried out to check for damage and to try and establish the cause of the fire.

Alan Booth, EnCore’s chief executive, said: “The well is currently approximately 10 metres above the reservoir and once essential safety checks are carried out it is anticipated drilling will recommence shortly thereafter.”
