Consultants brought in to check mine plans at Emed Mining’s Rio Tinto project
30 November 2009
As part of its effort to restart production at the Rio Tinto copper mine in Spain, AIM listed Emed Mining has confirmed that independent experts are on site to conduct due diligence investigations into its operating and rehabilitation plans.
Consultants from various firms are understood to be checking the integrity of the tailings dam wall and tailings dam capacity as well as the wider rehabilitation plans, mine plans health and safety systems.
Meanwhile, Emed said it was continuing to receive widespread community support for restarting work at the mine. Last week it was involved in a union-backed forum on mining in the Andalucia region where Government and union officials both voiced their backing for the project.
Commenting on the process to restart operations at Rio Tinto, Emed’s managing director, Harry Anagnostaras-Adams said: “The first step has always been to clean up its ownership and lay out a well-founded improvement and modernisation plan. Unfortunately, this has taken us longer than we anticipated. This is now behind us and we are now activating the completion and submission of all remaining regulatory documentation on detailed operating and rehabilitation plans.
“We want all documents to be submitted by the end of Q1-2010 so we can stick to our timetable for commissioning to start at the end of 2010 and production to settle down in 2011.”
