Aurelian Oil & Gas cheers dramatic change of fortune at Voitinel-1 well

Aurelian Oil & Gas has reported that the shallower sections of its Voitinel-1 well in the Brodina concession of Romania have turned up a gas discovery of something in the region of 50 and 100 billion cubic feet.
The discovery is a dramatic change of fortune for the Voitinel-1 well, which was drilled in September but initially produced disappointing results from its main, deeper target zone. At the time, Aurelian said that shallower areas of the well looked more interesting and the further test work would be undertaken.
Today, the company hailed the well as its largest discovery in Romania to date, with productive sand packages at two ranges between 1,653.0 metres to 1,772.5 and 1,396.4 metres to 1,419.2 metres. Regional seismic and comparison with wells outside the structure suggest that both sand packages extend beyond the mapped structure.
The current estimate of 50-100 billion cubic feet of gas in place only covers the deeper sand package because the shallower section has not yet been flow tested.
Aurelian and its partners S.N.G.N. Romgaz and Europa Oil & Gas are now looking at the options for appraisal and the commercial exploitation of the discovery.
In October, Aurelian announced that next year it would sell its operations focused on the Sarmatian exploration play. Instead it wants to concentrate on the Rotliegendes and Zechstein plays in Central and Western Poland and the Carpathian Thrust Fold belt in Southern Poland, Slovakia and Western Romania.
Rowen Bainbridge, the company’s chief executive, said the latest results would help it command full value from companies looking to acquire and develop the gas resources that have been discovered in the region so far.
